One of the hottest topics in corporate social responsibility today is the issue of Women’s position in the corporate world and the effect it has on ESG. By promoting and supporting Women’s rights and their contributions to their respective industries, we can help promote a more equitable and environmentally conscious future.
Women still face a number of disadvantages when it comes to corporate leadership, but research shows that empowering them and giving them equal opportunities can have immense benefits. Companies that prioritize gender balance and promote Women’s achievements tend to have higher revenues, improved morale, and overall better ESG ratings.
Some evidences for inclusivity of women in business include:
Improved Corporate Social Reputation
Companies that prioritize gender balance, promote women’s rights, and dedicate a substantial amount of resources to eliminating gender disparities can improve their overall corporate social reputation, leading to increased consumer loyalty and improved ESG ratings.
According to a 2019 survey published by Forbes, 90% of surveyed consumers claimed that they are more likely to purchase from companies that demonstrate a commitment to gender equality. In addition, a survey published by Edelman in 2016 found that 84% of consumers stated that they would change their purchased based on a company’s commitment to social responsibility, of which gender equality is an important part.
Increased Revenue
Research shows that empowering women and providing them with equal opportunities in the corporate world can significantly increase corporate revenue.
A 2020 study published by McKinsey Global Institute found that advancing gender parity could add as much as $12 trillion to global GDP. In addition, the same study found that advancing gender parity in the workplace could improve profit margins significantly, with companies that have an equal gender balance seeing up to 26% higher returns.
Improved Corporate Morale
By encouraging collaboration and providing women with opportunities to excel, companies can boost morale and foster a sense of pride among their employees. This can lead to higher job satisfaction, more employee engagement, and better productivity.
A 2017 study published in the Journal of Business Ethics that found that companies that promote gender equality in the workplace are associated with higher employee job satisfaction, which led to increased productivity, reduced turnover, and increased customer satisfaction.
Investment in Sustainable Development
Achieving gender parity and promoting women’s empowerment are widely recognized as important components of sustainable development. Partnerships between corporations and NGOs dedicated to advancing women’s rights and equality can help achieve the goals of the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
A report published by the United Nations in 2017 found that corporations that invest in initiatives promoting gender equality as part of their sustainable development efforts are not only contributing to the achievement of sustainable and equitable development, but are also gaining financial returns that help justify those investments.
